Non-Textbook Readings (Spring, 2007)

The articles below should be read by the date indicated below. Questions about these articles may appear on quizzes or exams scheduled after those dates. Several copies of each article are on reserve in the WSC Library. Most of the original magazines are also available in the library (but, not Geotimes). The text (but not the diagrams) for most articles can be found online (either on- or off-campus) through the Academic Search Premier database (see WSC Library web site).

You will be writing brief summaries for these articles as part of your homework/reading journal. Each summary is limited to one paragraph (a maximum of 200 words). Summaries should be well-organized and must, of course, be in your own words. Marks on the summaries will be based on how accurately you identify the 1-2 main points of the article, and on the clarity with which you explain/support those points.

Article #3 (Friday, March 9): Siebert, C. (2006, March). Unintelligent design. Discover, 27 (3), 32-39. This article is available at Imaginative Worlds, but not in the usual databases!

Article #4 (Wednesday, April 4): Clack, J.A. (2005, December). Getting a leg up on land. Scientific American, 293 (6), 100-107.

Article #5 (Wednesday, April 18): Horner, J.R., Padian, K. & de Ricqles, A. (2005, July). How dinosaurs grew so large - and so small. Scientific American, 293 (1), 56-63.

Article #6 (Monday, May 7): Wong, K. (2005, February). The littlest human. Scientific American, 292 (2), 56-65.
